Wahoos, often shorten to ‘Hoos, is one of the most apropos college nicknames, when considering this cousin of the Tuna and Mackerel is known to regular drink twice its weight. The origins goes back to the 1890’s when the W&L baseball fans dubbed the UVa players “a bunch of rowdy Wahoos.” The students from Mister Jefferson’s University took this as a compliment and wore it like a badge of honor, incorporating it into a rallying cry and the alma mater. Somewhere along the way, a more respectable “Cavaliers” was added and made the “official” nickname by the administration stiffs.
